Our Ears Listen But Our Brains Hear!

APD may occur WITH Attention Defecit Disorder (ADD), dyslexia and/or speech-language delay. If our ears are working (normal hearing), but our brains don’t interpret the information completely (APD), then learning difficulties result.

APD can affect Children and Adults

We assess listening skills.
At Hearing Services of Tennessee we believe in a team approach and make our recommendations according to the findings during our complete evaluation which includes:

  • Interview with the parent(s) and teacher(s)
  • Referrals for Speech/language and psycho-educational evaluations   or reports
  • Medical and family history
  • Perinatal information
  • Complete hearing evaluation
  • APD test battery which includes screening tests and then more   difficult listening tests to target more critical listening skills. These   tests include listening through headphones in difficult listening   situations…changes in speed or rate, complexity of content, and   leading ear preference.

What Can Be Done for APD?

There are many computer based learning programs that are used as part of your child’s therapy. Earobics and Fast Forward are two of the more frequently recommended programs available for home and school use. Keep in mind that evaluation and treatment for APD are a team approach usually managed by the speech pathologist or special education teacher.
